Night Caller, The ( M. Brooks/G. Courtney)
Greg wrote this lyric but hadn't written a tune yet. I had come up with a little mandolin tune which seemed to fit so hey presto a co-written song
Twas in the morning darkness came knocking at my door
I wondered who it could have been at twenty five past four
Perhaps I only dreamt it I really wasn't sure
I slipped into my trousers decided to explore
I peered out of the window into the empty street
But from somewhere out of sight I heard some shufflin' feet
I was more than slightly tempted to get back between the sheets
But more than slightly curious I heard the knock repeat
CHORUS
Shut the windows bolt the door
Find me somewhere safe to hide
Lord deliver me from harm
And nutters on the streets outside
I quickly tried to steal myself and take it in my stride
I pulled the bolt undid the latch and opened none too wide
I froze for just a moment when I saw who was outside
My good friend's woman, completely terrified
She began her story, I quickly got the gist
I knew that her old man was pretty handy with his fists
He made her life a misery every time he came home pissed
Never thought he'd hit her - she said he never missed
CHORUS
In all the time I had known her I'd not seen her so alarmed
See said that if she stayed the night she'd be safe from harm
I tried to make her comfortable to make her feel calm
I didn't mean it to happen but she fell into my arms
instrumental
I feel no need to justify the things I've said and done
Though I had to pack my bags when I found out he had a gun
He swore that he'd get vengeance he had to blame some one
And with that kind of nutter you're always on the run
CHORUS
